The Second Quarter is Here!
It's Monday April 5th and it is time to start measuring. You’ve spent the last 90 days working with your head down but now is the best time to slow down and look at your business. This is the most common reason small businesses fail: business owners work so hard each day to keep the machine running that they forget to look at the machine as a whole. You have to make sure your business machine is running properly.
So how did you do? Did you beat your goals? Did you goals beat you? Think back to all of the time you spent planning the year out and all the objectives you wanted to achieve. If these goals aren’t being measured, then they’re not important.
How do you make sure you stick to the plan you put in place? There is only one way to stick to your plan: keep your concrete goals in your sights and keep track of your progress towards those goals. Today's tidbit numerates a few easy ways to keep your plan top of mind.
The first thing you and your team should be doing is looking at is your sales goals. By now you should know if you hit your sales goal for the quarter. It is more important, though, to know why you did or didn’t hit that goal. Did you hit your goal because you had way more leads? Better sales tactics? The market demanded your product or service? Or did you miss your goal for the opposite reasons?
Knowing the why you did or didn’t hit your goal is much more important than knowing if you did or didn’t hit your goals. It allows you to make better decisions going forward.
The same principle applies for your profit targets. Did you or did you not hit your profit target? Again, more importantly, why did you or did you not hit your profit target?
What most business owners need to realize is the fact that results are a picture of the daily actions you take each day. If you are hitting your targets, your daily actions are aligned with your goals. Conversely, if you are not hitting your targets, your daily actions are not aligned with your goals.
Knowing this information is crucial to making sure the next quarter is ready to go and that you are in a position to continue your success. If you aren't hitting your goals, knowing this information will allow you to calibrate your daily actions and instruct your team to make adjustments.
