Book of The Year

As we head into cyber Monday and shopping picks up I wanted to discuss the book I felt was the best book published this year.

As an avid reader, this year has seen many many books pass over my desk, but by far the book that made the most impact on me out of all of them has been It Takes What It Takes: How to Think Neutrally and Gain Control of Your Life by Trevor Moawad.

If you have never heard of Trevor Moawad before, you are not alone, but you have probably seen or heard of his work. Being from Tennessee, I finally realized why the University of Tennessee doesn't have a chance at beating Alabama football any time soon after I read this book.

Trevor is a mental conditioning coach who works with athletes on getting their thoughts under control no matter what position they are in during a game. You might think that this stuff is a bunch of hogwash, but let's let his work do the talking. Have you ever heard of Russell Wilson, Alabama Football, Florida State, or Georgia Football? Thought so.

The entire book is about teaching the reader to start looking at things from a neutral perspective and not allowing negative or positive emotions to cloud your judgment. The book teaches the idea that the past happened, we know it happened, but it isn't predictive of what’s to come. You can calibrate and make adjustments to your future (both immediate and long-term) no matter what the past holds. With tons of tools, case studies, and personal testimonies from his clients, this book thoroughly equips the reader to make better decisions by removing the emotions that can often cloud our path to success.

What I love about his principles is that they don’t only apply to the world of sports. As you well know, businesses live and die on decision making. As leaders in and of said businesses, learning to shift your brain into neutral takes a lot of practice and conditioning. Though this will not be a skill that you can learn overnight, think of how it will impact the decisions you make on a daily basis.

I highly recommend this book for any and all levels of leadership in your organization. It would make a great gift for those avid readers in your circle. It’s a great read and an even better lesson to learn.
